Living in Barcelona

Perfect weather 360 days a year

Warm summers and semi-cold winters. The ideal temperature for the whole year. Thanks to its geographical position, Barcelona offers a perfect climate and ideal weather conditions for you to enjoy your new life in Spain every day.

International communities

More than 300,000 foreigners live in Barcelona, representing over 170 nationalities in the city. The expat communities therefore make up a large part of its population. This means that you will have no problem getting to know other people who are as far away from home as you are, even from your country of origin.

Architecture

Barcelona’s architecture attracts millions of visitors each year. The most important architectural monuments include works from Antoni Gaudí, Lluís Domènech i Montaner, and modern architects such as Jean Nouvel.

The Eixample district is known for its modernist architecture and is the area in which you will find most examples of these monuments. Amongst works by Antoni Gaudí here you will find La Pedrera (Casa Milà) and Casa Batlló along Passieg de Gràcia. You’ll also find Gaudí’s Sagrada Familia, his masterpiece that is still under construction. From here, Avinguda Gaudí connects you to Hospital de Sant Pau by Lluís Domènech i Montaner. In the Montjuic area, one of Barcelona’s famous hills, there are more interesting buildings such as Mies van der Rohe’s and Joan Miró’s Foundations, MNAC (Catalonia National Arts Museum), Palau Sant Jordi or the Olympic stadium.

The Barri Gòtic is full of neo-gothic and roman architecture hidden amongst its narrow streets. For example there’s Barcelona Cathedral, built in 1460, but renovated by the 20th century to a much grander scale. There’s Santa Maria del Mar church nearby in Born, an area that also hosts the Mercat del Born.

Close to La Rambla, in the Raval neighbourhood you can visit another Barcelona monument, Palau Güell, famous for its 20 colourful chimneys. It’s yet another building from the renowned Antoni Gaudí.

Unless you count Gràcia and its famous Parc Güell, you’re less likely to find modernist style buildings or works by Gaudí in these districts, but away from the centre there’s lots of architecture to sightsee with easy access via public transport. Monestir de Pedralbes (Pedralbes Monastery) is a charming escape built in the gothic style consisting of three buildings with many arches and columns.

Finally, there’s Camp Nou, an iconic location for football fans and followers of FC Barcelona. It’s one of the best examples of European stadiums as it’s the highest capacity at almost 100000 people.

Cultural life

Museums, exhibition centres, art galleries, music and UNESCO heritage… The cultural life of the city of Barcelona is very dynamic. Find more about it here. It is certainly not pretentious to say that Barcelona’s cultural heritage is extraordinary. As you wander around the city, you will come across a number of monuments that are listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites.

In addition, there is no shortage of museums. Between the Picasso Museum, the Joan Miro Foundation, the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the National Art Museum of Catalonia, Moco Museum, you won’t know where to turn! On the music side, there are several festivals held in the city. A Flamenco Festival in June, a Festival de la Música Antigua (ancient music) in April and a Jazz Festival in October.

Must do activities

The art of living in Barcelona means wandering around the different neighbourhoods, buying fruit and vegetables at the Boqueria, sitting on a terrace and sharing tapas with friends, eating at different hours, listening to music in the open air and partying all night long until the early hours…

Taste local products at La Boqueria, Barcelona's covered market

If there’s one place you need to go to get a taste of Barcelona’s gastronomy, it’s La Boquéria! Seasonal fruit and vegetables, freshly caught fish, cheeses, condiments, sweets, cold cuts, snacks and ready-made meals: you’ll find everything you need for a tasty snack.

Discover Barcelona's street art

Urban art in Barcelona is very popular. Barcelona was considered in 2005 as the “world capital of street art”. You can find several frescos while walking in the Raval, the El Born or Gracia districts. Several renowned artists are active in Barcelona: Invader, JR, El Pez, Juanjo Surace, Alice Pasquini or the French Miss Van.

Going out in Barcelona

Barcelona is well-known for its intense nightlife scene. It offers a wide variety of bars and nightclubs offering all kinds of music and an open atmosphere for all kind of tastes. Nightlife is specially vibrant on weekends, when the city is more crowded.

The city is famous for being a party town, full of young people who like to have fun in terraces, bars and nightclubs, from the afternoon until sunset. Barcelona is also well-known for beach clubs of the highest level, most of which are specially visited by tourists during the warm and sunny summer season.

At night the main electronic music dominates the party scene, with many international DJs and rising stars who parade in the most prestigious clubs.

Barcelona also hosts some very prestigious international music festivals, which include Sónar, Primavera Sound, Barcelona Jazz Festival and the concerts of the modernist Palau de la Música.
